THE GIFT OF GOD'S SON
Elder Louis Culver
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." -Isaiah 9:6.
Many years before this birth, the prophet Isaiah foretold of His coming. Not only did he say that a child would be born but also that it would be a son. He further stated that He would be called by several names, all of which were great attributes - all greater than could possibly be attributed to any other man in the world.
Jesus came willingly into this world for the express purpose of dying for our sins. He, the sinless Son of God, died for the sins of every child of God, for everyone the Father had given to Him. He paid the sin debt we owed but could not pay. What a gift God had given us that His Son should pay all our debt, marking it "Paid in Full." There is no balance left.
"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;" -I John 1:1. Some people do not believe that Jesus has come into the world; some do not believe there is a God; some do not believe that God is all-powerful. There are mixed approaches to the subject; but, so far as I am concerned, I believe God sent His Son into the world, sending Him to be our Redeemer. Jesus came and performed those duties He was to perform, then He returned to the Father. How could He have returned to the Father except that He had first come down from the Father?
God has truly given us many gifts, but the most significant gift of all is the gift of His Son, and the purpose for which He came. How many fathers today would even consider giving a son for the redemption of someone else?
As we ponder the tremendous implications of God's gift to us of His Son, let us give Him great and reverent thanks that He did.
